Verizon Moves Closer To An Open Network
Filed in archive Mobile Technologies by Jason Giacchino on June 22, 2008

Verizon Wireless confirmed that it will release its massive network to outside devices and applications by the end of next year. This news is the latest step in the dismantling of the traditional wireless industry as we know it. For years the United States (and many other nations) have sold phones locked to networks, saddled with contracts, and restrictions.
Verizon is offering up a totally new line of thinking to the industry where any cell phone or mobile device that complies with CDMA (code division multiple access) will be capable of running on Verizon's network and will allow any application on that phone access to its network. In other words, Verizon is hoping to unify the industry regardless of which brand of phone the consumer chooses.
Even more encouraging is the fact that Verizon Wireless has certified the first device that will operate on its Open Development network on Friday.
