Verizon and LG Bring Detachable Tech to the Masses

It was only a matter of time before someone did it and it turns out that someone was Verizon: The carrier announced its latest wunderkind, the LG Versa, a touch screen phone with a completely detachable QWERTY keyboard.

Without the keyboard, the Versa takes on the flavor of an iPhone with a full touch screen interface. Boasting a 3.0-inch screen with integrated accelerometer, which rotates the display automatically from portrait to landscape views.

The handset also includes a 2.0-megapixel camera and an HTML browser that supports Flash and RSS feeds.

The Versa comes with VCAST Music with Rhapsody and VCAST Video services. Users can browse and buy from over 5 million songs and download or stream video from news, sports and entertainment.

Productivity tools, such as Visual Voice Mail, allow users to prioritize their messages, while VZ Navigator transforms the handset into a GPS navigation device.

The big news however is the detachable keyboard, which will open up doors to other detachable hardware bits such as a dedicated game pad.

The LG Versa will be available online and in stores beginning March 1 for $200 after a $50 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement.

Full specs are available here.
