T-Mobile To Begin Pre-Selling New Android Phone

T-Mobile To Begin Pre-Selling New Android Phone

In effort to reaise up some well needed capital, struggling wireless carrier T-Mobile today began pre-selling the myTouch 3G, its second Google-powered smartphone.

T-Mobile, which currently sits in fourth-place in terms of sheer size among US carriers, is feeling the pressure amid a busy summer season filled with new smarphones (Palm's Pre and Apple's iPhone 3GS have already hit stores, and Research in Motion's BlackBerry Tour is set to be released later this month).

Google's first Android-powered smartphone, the G1, was an unexpected success for T-Mobile; selling one million units by the end of last year.

The myTouch, for all facts and circumstances, is a sleeker version of the G1 with a larger focus on software. The Android Marketplace now boasts 5,000 apps but still a tenth of the size of Apple's untouchable App Store.

The handset will boast such hot selling features as a 3.2-megapixel camera, music player and video capabilities to share photos and videos on sites like YouTube and Picasa. It can also be personalized with custom home screens, widgets and learn user preferences and offer recommendations.

The T-Mobile myTouch 3G will hit stores on Aug. 5 and will sell for $199 with a two-year contract, a mere $20 more than the original G1.
