T-Mobile Germany has taken a step forward toward blending GSM/UMTS and WiFi through the announcement of T-One, a new service that allows users on selected handsets (to be piloted on Nokia N80 and E60 handsets, both able to handle SIP-based Internet calls). Certain PC cards and Fujitsu-Siemens laptops with embedded WiFi will also be able to access the service, according to T-Mobile.

Interestingly, Nokia and T-Mobile are putting emphasis on multimedia apps and other bandwidth-hungry applications as a main driver for the service.

"We are very pleased to be opening the door to the future of multimedia and broadband telecommunications by engaging in this pilot with Nokia", said Achim Berg, a member of the T-Com Board of Management, Marketing and Sales.
