Sprint’s Latest Gizmo Targets Laptop Users

Sprint

Laptop users are about to have a reason to turn to Sprint for their wireless needs as the company has just announced plans for a new $149.99 laptop modem that will allow users to switch between the company's normal cellular network and the new high-speed WiMAX network.

WiMAX is similar to the Wi-Fi broadband services, and can cover an entire city and provide download speeds up to five times faster than Sprint's current wireless network.

Sprint merged its WiMAX assets last month with Clearwire. The new company, also called Clearwire, plans to roll out commercial WiMAX service in select markets next month.

The only bad news is that this technology is heavily based upon location and will not be available nationwide for some time. According to Sprint some 60 million people will have WiMAX access by the end of 2009.
