Sling Media, makers of the SlingBox place-shifting video device, have announced the launch of a beta test of their mobile player. The mobile player, which works on Windows Smartphones, lets SlingBox owners use a compatible handset to access the video stream from their home television.
"The Slingbox has created a whole new Phenomenon in television viewing," said Blake Krikorian, Sling Media CEO & co-founder. "With SlingPlayer Mobile, we continue to make it easier to extend your living room TV experience to wherever you happen to be and ensure that you never miss that pivotal play or big news event and that you always know the score."
When launched, the SlingPlayer mobile will cost about US$30, and only support a limited range of Windows smartphones, although the company is evaluating support for other platforms.

Before taking advantage of the latest Sling Media software, you have to get the Slingbox hardware up and running. You connect the Slingbox to your Internet router and hook up the necessary cables to your home TV or other gear. (I bypassed the TV altogether and connected Slingbox directly to my cable feed.) For $99, Sling Media sells a networking kit to transmit Internet signals throughout your home’s wall plug sockets, useful if your router is far from the TV.
