Mobile Internet

VoIP applications popularized by Skype have challenged the expensive call rates offered by traditional landline and mobile carriers alike. However, the hurdle is making this PC-based application mobile.
The latter part of 2007 saw the onset of mobile VoIP with the introduction of 3 Skypephone. This year, Skype is expanding its mobile strategy given the widespread Internet access. According to a statement by Skype mobile and hardware devices general manager Gareth O'Loughlin:
"Internet access is rapidly spreading beyond just the home or office computer, and a world increasingly blanketed with wireless connections is giving Skype conversations the freedom to travel almost anywhere. With the introduction of new mass-market devices at CES that support Skype, millions of people around the world will now be able to leave the desk behind, put Skype in their pocket and take their conversations with them. I think that is immensely liberating."Kicking off this month at the ongoing CES 2008 is the ability to use Skype to gaming console PlayStationPortable (PSP). Moreover, its integration with Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, Freetalk Wireless Stereo Headset, mylo Communicator and Intel-based mobile devices signal stronger mobility and freedom from expensive call rates.
As we move towards the realization of Mobile 2.0, expect some more dramatic developments that will benefit us all.
