A story from The Internet Patrol (which we first saw on Engadget Mobile) shows off one of the side effects of the magnetic closure on the Sidekick 3 handset. The magnet is strong enough to hold a fork (as shown in the image), and in testing has also been shown to wipe the data from a credit card's magnetic strip in under a second. Whilst credit cards that have a blank strip can still be used by typing in the number of using the old style card impression readers, it's the strength of the magnet that's raising eyebrows.
One commenter on Gozmodo's story notes that the same happened with a Sidekick 2 and hotel keycards, whilst another commenter claims the Moto PEBL does the same thing.
So, a friendly warning to Sidekick 3 users – keeping your phone next to your credit cards may not be a good thing…

That is quite a downside for owners/users of this handset as although they may know of this problem there is always the chance of someone forgetting and then having to go through the headache of sorting their then non-usable credit card problem.
They shouldn’t really have to be worrying about putting their handset and CC into the same pocket or placing them near each other.

When I first heard about this, I couldn’t believe it. I had to try it myself to see. Same Sidekick 3, just Swarovski crystal studded, doing its tricks: http://bling-phone.blogspot.com/2006/07/sidekick-3-hazardous-to-your-wallet.html . That Amex card still works even though it got plenty of lovin’ from the SK3. Maybe it just depends on the strength of the mag stripe?
