Sidekick 3 Can Wipe Credit Card Mag Strips

Filed in archive Mobile Technologies by tom on July 19, 2006

A story from The Internet Patrol (which we first saw on Engadget Mobile) shows off one of the side effects of the magnetic closure on the Sidekick 3 handset. The magnet is strong enough to hold a fork (as shown in the image), and in testing has also been shown to wipe the data from a credit card's magnetic strip in under a second. Whilst credit cards that have a blanklinks strip can still be used by typing in the number of using the old style card impression readers, it's the strength of the magnet that's raising eyebrows.

One commenter on Gozmodo's story notes that the same happened with a Sidekick 2 and hotel keycards, whilst another commenter claims the Moto PEBL does the same thing.

So, a friendly warning to Sidekick 3 users - keeping your phone next to your credit cards may not be a good thing...
