Mobile phones have evolved over time, allowing us to do many things aside from calling. But I'm a bit surprised to know that mobile phones play a key role in surveying the wild bird populations!
According to UK Telegraph, MIT researchers believe cellphones can keep more accurate counts of owls.
When Eben Goodale wants to count the birds, he places a call that triggers phones in the forest to play, via speakers, pre-recorded owl calls, such as hoots and whistles.Territorial owls raise their heads and approach what they think may be an intruder. If they respond with a hoot, the phones transmit the sound back to the "owl project" website.
The same response was monitored among different animals in the territory. If this study is accepted, we standard practice of "standing in the woods, playing a CD of bird calls, and taking note of the birds they hear responding." The bottom line is less expenses and more efficient monitoring.
Wow! Isn't that great news? I'm glad to know the contribution of mobile advancements across different fields. Who knows, maybe the next big market of mobile phones is the ANIMAL KINGDOM! In fact, it has already started with PetsCell, a mobile phone for dogs.
