It was all smiles and kissy kissy on Valentine's Day as Nokia and Sanyo announced they planned to join up their CDMA efforts to take on Samsung, LG and others in this market. The JV would have put the combined group at about a quarter of the CDMA market overnight.
Now, those smiles have turned upside down and Nokia and Sanyo have gone their separate ways. The pair announced yesterday they are no longer interested in this JV idea, and that Nokia will not go into the CDMA market any further. The Finns said about the breakup:
"In addition to an already financially prohibitive CDMA ecosystem in general, recent developments may indicate that the CDMA emerging markets business case is looking more challenging."
The firm said that abandoning this deal would provide a positive financial bump, and that it will wind up CDMA business by April of next year.
