Samsung’s Latest Phone Says Goodbye to Batteries

Samsung

Years ago all calculators relied upon batteries to provide electricity for computation and display. Then it was realized that solar power offered up enough energy to do the job. These days it's nearly impossible to find one without a little black solar strip.

Samsung unveiled its latest mobile phone that will not only be constructed from recycled plastic water bottles; it will operate entirely on solar power.

Dubbed 'Blue Earth,' the touch-screen phone will be charged via a solar panel located on the back. The shell is made from recycled plastic that is extracted from water bottles and even the packaging is made from recycled paper.

As far as features are concerned, users will have the option of engaging "Eco Mode" which reduces screen brightness, backlight duration and Bluetooth for more energy-efficiency. With "Eco Walk" users can count their steps with an in-built pedometer, even calculating how much CO2 emissions were cut by walking as opposed to driving.

Samsung Blue Earth will be showcased at Mobile World Congress 2009 next week.

Mobile phones with solar energy have certainly a great future.
A combination of solar energy and (shock and splash) resistant phones would be a perfect outdoor phone. I think this will also come soon.
