RIM Ponies Up For New Browser

In the war to becoming the world's top smartphone maker, every little bit helps to gain an edge. Keeping that in mind, Research in Motion (RIM) has acquired Torch Mobile, maker of the Iris browser for Windows Mobile, to improve its own BlackBerry Internet experience.

Released in 2008, the Iris browser renders Web sites on smartphones as if they were viewed on a PC.

It offers touch screen and "mouse cursor" controls with zoom, tap, and scroll functionality — similar to Apple's iPhone browser.

"Torch Mobile's team has been actively involved in open source development and includes contributors, committers, and reviewers of the Webkit project," the company said. "As part of RIM, these developers will continue to be active participants in the Webkit development community."

RIM did not disclose the purchase price for Torch Mobile or a timetable for the improved BlackBerry browser.
