Quick- what's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of charging your cell phone? If you said a cord, an electrical outlet or even a docking station, you may want to read on.
Nokia researchers are working on development of cellular phone charging by simply capturing ambient radio waves all around us.
The reality is that radio waves are emitted by all sorts of electronics and pass through our bodies constantly. Nokia's plan is to harvest this energy as it passes through the phone's internal circuitry where it could then be used to recharge the battery itself. Using technology similar to RFID, Nokia is hoping to convert the electromagnetic energy of the waves into an actual electrical current. Nokia can currently harvest 3 to 5 milliwatts of power but it's a bit of a stretch to hit the 50 milliwatts of voltage required to charge a phone (off of course).
Nokia has not indicated when or if the fruits of this labor could result in the collective dumping of phone chargers all around the globe but it is a scientifically sound idea that we hope will come to pass. The new Nokia 97 has proven to be a very popular handset, and an endless battery would be the icing on the cake!
