The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has announced plans to revise the current standard that governs the design and manufacture of rechargeable lithium ion & polymer batteries.
The current standard (IEEE Std 1725) has been in place since 2006 but the IEEE states that it is already outdated due to increased adoption of connected devices. The undertaking aims to improve the quality and reliability of both lithium-ion and lithium-ion polymer batteries to meet increased consumer demand for more power and longer runtimes for converged devices.
The IEEE has established the Cell Phone Battery Working Group to tackle the revisions through a voting system in with each participating member will have one vote. The group's first meeting is scheduled to be held in February 2010.
