Microsoft Plans its iPhone Killer

Don't for a minute believe that a company can have the type of success that Apple has had with its iPhone and not have everyone else gunning for them. The latest in a long list of mobile phone handsets designed to steal a piece of the iPhone pie comes from none other than the maker of Windows.

Software giant Microsoft is in talks with Verizon Wireless to launch a touch screen smartphone early next year code-named "Pink," which hopes to widen the reach of its Windows Mobile operating system.

The handset will also include Microsoft's new Windows Marketplace for Mobile, a virtual application store similar to Apple's successful App Store.

Verizon is also in talks with competitor Apple about bringing its own version of the iPhone and a "media pad" device (see my last post for more on this), to its network.

Microsoft rival Google last year launched a smartphone, the T-Mobile G1, which runs on the Internet search giant's new Android mobile operating system.
