Microsoft Follows Apple’s Tactics When It Comes to Applications

Microsoft Follows Apple

Apple has received the lion's share of the media's attention not only for well designed hardware but also through innovations like the App Store which allows users of its iPhone to download applications for their devices, with games, travel info or news services rounding out the top choices. Apple claims that within the first six months of operation, the App Store has surpassed 500,000 downloads.

Microsoft has announced an answer to the store's popularity with its own version that's being called Windows Marketplace for Mobile.

Unlike Apple, Microsoft does not make smartphones itself, but it hopes to establish its Windows operating system for mobile phones as the industry standard much in the same way as it has dominated the market for personal computers.

Apple credits much of its success to having opened up the iPhone to outside developers who have in turn created loads of applications to add functionality to the device.

Microsoft too will open up to outside developers (and allow them to improve the core Windows product) in effort to encourage mobile phone makers to use Windows over rival operating systems.

    MSFT is so dumb!!!

Can you see a user saying to another, “hey you should buy that from Microsoft’s MarketPlace for Mobile” or “from the MarketPlace” or any other variation. (buy at iTunes; its simple)

If MSFT thinks they are going to win against Apple by competing on “tactics”, they are highly mistaken.

If MSFT wants to gain any attention away from Apple, RIM, GPhone (whomever enters the market)they be better off announcing their new platform with differentiators like “all proceeds of built/sold apps are for sellers.” The only caveat; users have to have a windows mobile phone with MSFT Mobile/WebOS…

Something like that. That would get major attention from the dev community and new app world.

HEY STEVE and MSFT…You’re sleeping on the job!!
