LG Brings DTV To Its Phones

LG realizes that to rekindle slumping sales, innovations in the cellular industry have to be above and beyond the norm, aside from just offering mobile phone deals.

That said, the company has unveiled a new line of handsets that are capable of receiving free digital TV transmissions over the air.

LG loaded its ATSC Mobile Digital Television (DTV) system onto prototypes of its Lotus and Voyager handsets to demonstrate how easy it'll be to watch TV on on LG phones (their sets).

As such LG had to make some tweaks to the power management of the handsets, allowing users to view up to four hours of digital TV before needing a recharge.

At present these phones were created for demonstration purposes only, but show that mobile phones are certainly capable of receiving free, over-the-air DTV broadcasts. LG didn't confirm if or when it would offer phones with these capabilities built in to the public but based on how effective the technology appears, it's a safe bet.
