Google, Skype, Sequoia Have Some FON

Filed in archive Mobile Technologies by Editor on February 5, 2006

You remember Fon? I wrote about them here a couple of weeks ago. Well, someone must have read it because Google has now made its first equity investment, along with Skype and Sequoia Captial, to the tune of $21.7 million to support Martin Varsavsky's innovative model for sharing hotspots. Now, what would Skype and Google want with hotspots? Om Malik and his pals debate the pros and cons of Fon's emerging strategy -- including Fon now having the funds to pursue a strategy of selling their own plug-and-play routerslinks if they so choose. Nationwide Wi-Fi voice network, anyone?
