EU Commission Investigates Roaming Charges

Last year, EU Information Society and Media CommissionerRoaming charges can be extremely high between some countries, with a 4 minute call from France to the UK costing up to €4.92, and upto €5.50 if someone calls you whilst you're in France.Viviane Reding launched an EU website publicising the charges travellers faced making and receiving calls on their mobile phones in other European countries.
However, the move did little to cut roaming charges, the Commission said, and in some cases, prices increased.
"It is high time that the EU's internal market delivered substantially lower communication charges for consumers and business people travelling abroad," said Ms Reding.
"I therefore propose that an EU regulation be used to eliminate all unjustified roaming charges.
"A mobile phone customer should not be charged a higher tariff just because he is travelling abroad."
The proposed legislation will require the approval of the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers.
At the same time, some charges have risen dramatically, with O2's charge to receive a call from the UK whilst in Italy or Portugal rising from €1.66 in September 2005 to €5.50 in March 2006.
