Desperate Disney Mobile to Target Japanese Women
Filed in archive Mobile Technologies by leo on January 23, 2008

Brace yourself Hello Kitty! According to WSJ, Disney Mobile service is coming to Japan and will target japanese women
age 20 to 30 years old. Initially positioned for kids, its gamble in the U.S. together with Sprint Nextel did not pay off. Now, it is more confident to setup a similar service in Japan because it is backed by the country's 3rd biggest and fast growing mobile operator, Softbank. It's not exactly a hit-or-miss strategy and it has business logic, too.
For one, a Disney senior vice president believes Mickey Mouse has a large adult following in Japan because its Tokyo Disney Resort theme park is a very popular dating destination. Also, 75% of its mobile Websites subscribers in Japan are women.
Initial handsets will come in metallic shades of gold, silver and Hello Kitty pink. However, the company declined to provide pricing details and target subscribers in the first year.
