Mobile advertisers might want to tweak their programs and target more college students. A new study from Ball State University has revealed that this segment is more receptive to mobile ads through text messages.
Highlight of the survey include:
- 37.4% of college students said it would only take the offer of a free ring tone for them to accept advertisements on their cell phones.
- 21.4% preferred a discount or coupon to a restaurant, movie or grocery store.
- 20% wanted free minutes, upgrades, access to the internet or music.
This might be the break many mobile advertisers are looking for – the early adapters. A few months ago about 79% of consumers are annoyed with mobile ads. Perhaps the youth market can help drive mainstream acceptance.

I live in the UK and that business model is just arriving here, and they´re specificly targeting under age students. It makes sense, they give high importance to their social live but they have no income.

Students like these adds because they are addicted to fast information. I couldn’t imagine my college life without the mobile phone. The young ones are far more receptive to what’s new.
