Can Frontline Wireless Alter the Wireless Industry?

What exactly is on your mind if you create a powerhouse team composed of a former Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission
, a founding CEO of Vanguard Cellular, a former head of the National Telecommunications, and a bunch of Silicon Valley's power elite? Global domination?
Disruption of Wireless Industry? or
Plain crazy idea?
I guess you have to ask startup company Frontline Wireless. Reuters reports this company is in talks with regulators to ditch numerous wireless networks restrictions and allow Internet service providers like Google to enter this market!
Here's the rundown:
Playing Field:
$100 billion U.S. wireless market.
Objective:
Buy wireless spectrum, use Internet technology and a new type of software-based radio system for a network that public safety workers could share with commercial groups as diverse as traditional cellular phone providers, Internet companies and even energy utilities.
Potential Customers:
*The Big 4 - AT&T, Verizon, Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile for meagerly populated areas not covered by their networks.
*Web giants Google, Yahoo, Microsoft who are dying to enter the wireless industry
*Utility companies for remote management of their facilities.
Potential Enemy:
The Big 4! Do you honestly expect them to just sit and do nothing? Please!
The Big Winner:
CONSUMERS - better alternatives and lower prices (from possible price wars).
The concept of coopetition (coined word for cooperative competition) is something radical in this industry while animosity is an everyday occurrence. While Frontline's business plan is very impressive, it is premature to predict the bloodshed needed to achieve its goals.
I'm really excited to see the outcome of this venture.
