In an uncharacteristic move in these rough economic times, AT&T has decided that all new customers who plan to use a smartphone have to subscribe to a $30 monthly data plan starting September 6.
The company says the new mandate was implemented to increase customer satisfaction by eliminating fluctuations and unusually high bills.
The change will not affect non-smartphone subscribers or existing customers with a smartphone. Current smartphone users can chose not to buy a dedicated data plan until they upgrade their phone or plan so long as they realize the risks of price fluctuations by trying to access data with insufficient (voice-only) plans.
Smartphones include the iPhone, BlackBerries, Windows Mobile, Symbian and Palm devices.

I cannot believe how unbelievably stupid some companies can be. Why would they “mandate” customers’ buy a service. Isn’t that the option of the customer. And, if they have a smartphone customer, they are going to get the revenue anyway. This is just arrogance and stupidity at it’s worst.
