While there’s no denying the convenience of voicemail, dialing in to your account then listening in can be tough in public. AT&T’s got a new service that aims to eliminate such inconveniences.
Calling the service Voicemail to Text, AT&T will translate a vocal message into onscreen display. With it, users can receive voicemail messages as text messages, emails, or both.
Responding can be done in one of three ways: Vocal call back, text, or reply by email Voicemail messages can be forwarded to others by text message or email and finally messages can be saved in the phone or on your computer for as long as your heart desires.
The service goes for $9.99 and doesn’t affect your ability to use your standard voicemail service.

This seems like such a simple technology that I wonder why it hadn’t come out earlier on AT&T. I believe there have been services to do this for a while now. It’s about time AT&T, but I think I’m still switching over to Verizon.

It’ll be interesting to see if this service does well. Part of the reason texting took off in the first place was because of it’s low cost. Yet the ability to connect on the go, in any situation, has had increasing demand. So perhaps being able to hear voicemail in a more accessible format will help this service do well.
